Rochefort Saint-Louis Church

ROCHEFORT SAINT-LOUIS CHURCH

Arriving in Rochefort and heading for downtown, the visitor is stricken with the stately and elegant corinthian portico of the Saint-Louis Church. And from Place Colbert, a touch of Italy greets his eyes.

Saint-Louis Church was built on the location of the former Capuchin Friary and completed in 1835. The graeco-roman style expresses the industry great strides and the ingenious character of the town, in a vision that the reign of King Louis-Philippe endeavored to give Rochefort with namely the "Porte du Soleil", triumphant entrance to the Arsenal. The church is an integral part of its environment, like in Rome without a huge parvis. In the left aisle, rest : Admiral Rigault de Genouilly (Rochefort, April 4, 1807 - Paris, May 4, 1873) French Marine Minister of Napoleon III, Michel Bégon (Blois, December 25, 1638 - Rochefort, March 14, 1710) Navy Intendant in the port of Rochefort and his daughter, married to La Galissonnière and mother of Admiral La Galissonnière. Bégon's tomb shows the following epitaph : "He found a wooden town and left it in stone". With Colbert du Terron, he was the main actor of the town growth. He was for Rochefort what Girardin de Vauvré (1647-1724) was for Toulon. In the choir, the high altar presents a gracefully adorned baroque baldachin.

This majestuous and powerful graeco-roman style is considered the national style of the United States today. Merry Christmas to each and every!
