Freemasonry, Lafayette and American Independence

FREEMASONRY, LAFAYETTE AND AMERICAN INDEPENDENCE

LaFayette whose wife belongs to the powerful family de Noailles is totally impregnated with the spirit of the Enlightenment through meeting encyclopedists, philosophers and Freemasonry. He will become an ardent member of this traditional initiatory order that he entered when he was 18. He owes his education to Abbé Raynal, his true mentor, himself a Freemason from the lodge "Les Neuf Soeurs".

He very soon turns to be enthusiast for the cause of American Independence which was so very highly praised among the Freemasons. Remember that it is mainly their work. All the officers on board the frigate Hermione were Brothers. Why as from their first encounter with Washington, a great friendship was born between the Marquis and the general who was going to become the first President of the United States(in 1789)? (see article : Secrets of a lifelong friendship). At the beginning, 7 colonies are in open insurrection out of the 13 colonies including 7 Lodges among which 4 of their Grand Masters were opposed to Independence. LaFayette entered a military lodge presided by George Washington. The general encouraged these lodges for the Insurgents were lacking discipline and for Washington, masonry was a good mean of teaching them. Back in the United States in 1825, LaFayette tells his American Brothers in a lodge: "After entering the American masonry, Gen. Washington seemed to have received an inspiration. Since that time, I never had the opportunity to doubt about his full confidence. And soon after I was commissioned a Commander-in-Chief". This command did make him play an important part in the victory of Yorktown in October 1781 which was greeted in France by the lighting of Paris and one year later by the signing of the peace preliminaries between the Americans and British, always in Paris.
LaFayette who loved liberty and fraternity completely invests in his mission. All along this latter, one can find the hand of the Freemasonry: at the "Boston Tea Party", organized by the "Saint-Andrew's Lodge", by the preponderant influence on the "Declaration of Independence of the United States" where all the writers are Freemasons. Even General Lord Cornwallis who surrenders in Yorktown (Painting above) was a Brother. He hands his sword to the American and foreign offficers in a surrender that resembles more an allegiance. All these men were bound by an outstanding humanistic ideal that allowed to believe in the creation of a so far unconceivable idealist state.
Until his death in 1834, the Hero of the Two Worlds will remain faithful to Freemasonry. He was a member of both the "Grand-Orient" and the "Suprême Conseil de France" and remains the symbol of French-American Friendship. One must recall however that in the XVIIIth Century, the prices for the contributions, renting of taverns and costs of agapes were very high and therefore not accessible to the ordinary run of mankind. Philippe d'Orléans, cousin of the king Louis XVI and father of the later king Louis-Philippe 1er was Grand-Master of the "Grand-Orient". However, lodges were the only coterie where people could talk freely in an absolute monarchy so prompt to deliver orders of arrest under the King's private seal. Voltaire was initiated at the Lodge "Les Neuf Soeurs" soon after his death, and all the great spirits of the time, such as Montesquieu, used to meet there regularly.
Almost all the American Presidents were Freemasons. America was built on masonic ideals and values. The architecture of Washington D.C. is typically masonic, its French architect Pierre Charles L'Enfant, was a Freemason himself.
Freemasonry, including the "Grand-Orient" accompanied the birth of the United States. In Philadelphia, one can visit the National Constitution Center, on Independence Mall, it is a homage to the signatories to the American Constitution: their names and portraits are displayed to the public with their masonic membership, that is 13 out of the 39 signatories of the Constitution of the United States of America promulgated in 1787. In Alexandria, Virginia, the Washington Masonic Memorial is really awesome and shows masonic relics of Washington and LaFayette.
